“History is often the result of small
things and minor decisions which snowball into something far bigger. The
assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 led to the First World War.
In 1955, Rosa Parks, an African-American, refused to give up her seat for a
white passenger, setting into motion a chain of events which led to the birth
of the civil rights movement in the US.
Sometimes, however, it’s not what someone does, but what they
don’t. Noland Bushnell, the man who founded Atari (once the world’s leading
computer gaming system), had hired Steve Jobs in the early 1970s. In 1976, Jobs
left to set up Apple Computers and offered Noland a 1/3rd share of his new company for $50,000. Noland
turned it down, something he admittedly regrets to this day. Atari is no longer
quite the household name that it once was, and Apple Computers is predicted to
reach a market value of $1 trillion fairly soon”.
History is replete with many other such examples of missed
opportunities but I won’t bore you with those that missed these opportunities,
instead I want to tell you about the opportunity to own a home in Lagos.
