Nigerians abroad to commit N3tn to housing project

A former Co-Chair, International Conference of Infrastructure Development and Environment, Ms. Temitope Ajayi, has said that Nigerians living abroad will remit home about N3tn for the Federal Government’s housing programme for Nigerians in the Diaspora.

In an interview with our correspondent in Ilorin on Friday, Ajayi stated that the estimated 17 million-unit housing deficit in the country could be bridged through the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders.

Lamenting that some Nigerians did not have shelter, she said the Federal Government’s housing programme was laudable and could substantially provide opportunities for more citizens to own their homes.

She stated that the housing programme was a novel approach to getting Nigerians living abroad to partner with the government to reduce the housing deficit and to develop new towns.

Ajayi, who is also the President Emeritus, All Nigerian American Congress, added that the investment by Nigerians in the Diasporas in the real estate sector would boost activities in the sector.

She said, “President Goodluck Jonathan’s housing programme can be likened to the Obamacare of United States of America. The Goodluck Housing for the Diaspora is a novel approach to solving the housing deficit in Nigeria.

“The citizens in the Diaspora are ready for the housing project and we will continue to support the government. About three million Nigerians abroad could directly or indirectly benefit from the project and we will continue to support the President.

“We will remit about N3tn for the one million housing units. The money will have great impact on the economy. The paint factory will start making paints. It will boost cement production, while the nail and asbestos manufacturers will get a boost. It will bring about the development of new towns and increase the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

“The Federal Government has approved one million housing units; maybe with time, it will be higher. The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and First Bank are the financiers. We have two developers already. The housing project is going to be in every state, but the pilot scheme will be in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kano.”
